An Honest Engine – Our Metaphor for Recovery

What Does an Engine Have to Do with Recovery?

Building an engine isn’t easy; though it also isn’t as hard as you may think. In many ways, it’s like Legos for adults. The awesome part about building an engine is you must constantly work through real problems that seem insurmountable at first. All problems are completely solvable with a little thought and maybe even some research.

You might be wondering how this has anything to do with recovery. Well, it’s applicable in a few ways, but with respect to your time, the most important similarity between building an engine and a person’s recovery is having the right tools. For instance, a ring compressor is imperative to installing pistons in an engine block, just like being a man of your word is imperative to changing your life. Another example is an engine needs three things to run: spark, air, and fuel. You, my friend, also need three things to run: Belief in yourself, community, and healthy choices. Basically, we all are engines…we just have complicated parts.

Our intention with this part of the program is not to help you become a certified mechanic. We only wish to give you an opportunity to participate in something you may have never thought you could do or even thought about in the first place. Maybe you already love cars and know a thing or two about building engines, but this love has been placed on the back burner for a while because of drugs, alcohol, or mental health struggles. Maybe you simply work or learn better while working with your hands. Or, maybe, you just want to build something we end up donating to a charity. Whatever the case may be, you don’t have to participate in it at all so long as your reasoning for not participating is because you don’t think you can do it.
