A Note to Potential Balance House Clients
There are many services that look great in a brochure, but we believe most of what makes a program great are the things you cannot describe in marketing material. Maybe we’re crazy, but we assume people just want the truth about what we can do and what we can’t. So, if it is brochures you need to help you make a decision about the right program fit, we are probably not the program for you. Further, take a look at many of the websites out there and what you will find is much of the same words describing the same ideas. We suppose that means recovery isn’t rocket science.
We understand that who we are and what we stand for isn’t agreeable to everyone. Who we are is a group who do not believe you are as broken as you think you are and that in fact, many times, it’s these thoughts of brokenness that keep you from being successful. We know the treatment programs we choose to associate with have given you some of the best treatment available, but most importantly, we understand that providers can only do so much. It is in fact up to you to make the decision to change your life. We will be there every step of the way and have your back 150,000 percent, but it is you who either makes or breaks your success. I wish we had better news for you, but another perspective would show that to be a source of great power. At Balance House, we focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t do. The only limits are those you place on yourself.
Our services can be summarized as follows: true 24-hour supervision by paid and qualified staff, drug testing at least two times a week, transportation, activities like paintball, sober sports leagues (including one of the largest sober softball leagues in the country with 55 teams and over 500 participants, which goes from March to September each year), and Balance House alumni events. You will have a primary therapist, attend clinical groups, participate in experiential outings, and participate in psycho-educational/didactic therapy designed to continue the great work you started while you were in phase 1.
Oh, and please know, it is a requirement to have some fun, laugh, and joke around. It is also imperative that you participate a fair amount in building your own program of recovery. Simply put, we want to know what you would like to do with your time while you are with us.
Clients:
If you decide Balance House is right for you, all we ask is that you (a) have a sense of humor, (b) make a relationship with us, (c) never lie to us, and (d) always do your best. Oh yeah…and take 87.3 percent of our suggestions. Trust that we care. Trust that we are here for your best interests. Trust that maybe…just maybe we know what we are talking about. Trust that we were once 30 days sober too.
Parents and Family:
If you believe we can help your son or family member, then trust that we know what we are doing. Trust that we will do everything in our power to help him the best way we know how. Trust that we are taking great care with him if he allows us to. Know that we will call you back and return e-mails promptly. Know that we care about your son or family member and are supremely concerned about their safety. Understand that if it comes down to a single resident or the rest of the house, we are going to choose the house every time. Finally, please be very open-minded to suggestions. We are on the same team with the same goals.
Referents:
We thank you for even considering Balance House as an option. We know that when you refer one of your clients to us, you are putting your word, your name, and your professional reputation on that referral. Please know we do not take this lightly. All we ask is that you give us a chance and hold off on preconceived notions about who we are and what we do. We may not look like other programs you refer to, but I assure you we are just as good. We are not the right fit for everyone (no one is) but we excel at what it is we do. We thank you for the work you do for people like us!
