Your Family Matters

We strongly encourage families to participate in family therapy because healing is most sustainable when the family has an opportunity to grow alongside their loved one.

By the time many families arrive at Balance House, they have spent months or years worrying, questioning, helping, setting boundaries, hoping things will improve, and wondering what they could have done differently.

You deserve your own space to process what has happened, speak honestly, ask difficult questions, and begin understanding your experience. We want to support you through that process as well.

Building Trust with Your Loved One

During the early stages of treatment, one of our most important responsibilities is establishing a trusting relationship with your loved one.

For therapy to be effective, they need to know they can speak openly and honestly with their treatment team. If they believe everything they share will immediately be reported back to their family, it can interfere with the safety and trust necessary for meaningful therapeutic work.

We ask you to trust us as we build that relationship. This does not mean you will be left wondering what is happening. You will receive regular communication and updates from the treatment team. We will protect the therapeutic relationship while also keeping you meaningfully connected to the process.

Trusting the Process

There may be times when our recommendations feel uncomfortable or even counterintuitive. For parents, this can be one of the most difficult parts of treatment. Sometimes what is most therapeutic for your loved one may feel very different from what you have always believed being a “good parent” requires.

You may want to help when we are asking you to step back. You may want to protect him when we are asking you to allow natural consequences. You may want to make something easier when learning to work through discomfort is an important part of his growth.

We understand how difficult these moments can be, and we will walk through them with you.

Family Therapy

Family therapy will begin when your loved one’s primary therapist believes the timing is clinically appropriate. The frequency and structure will be based on the needs of your family.

This work is about more than what your loved one needs to change. It is an opportunity to better understand one another, strengthen communication, repair relationships, establish healthier boundaries, and create a stronger foundation for what comes next.

Taking Care of You

For many families, their loved one’s struggles have consumed an enormous amount of emotional energy. You may have become accustomed to living in a constant state of worry, uncertainty, or crisis management.

Treatment provides an opportunity for your loved one to receive support, but it also creates an opportunity for you to begin taking care of yourself again. We hope you will give yourself permission to do that.

Family Intensives

As treatment progresses, we may invite your family to participate in a Family Intensive at Balance House. These intensives provide an opportunity to spend meaningful time together, participate in family therapy, share meals, learn, reconnect, and hopefully have some fun together. When clinically appropriate, we also encourage time together outside of the treatment environment.

Family Intensives are offered approximately every six weeks. We generally recommend that your loved one has been with us for at least 60 days and that your family has participated in several family therapy sessions before attending. Every family is different, and some may benefit from waiting longer before participating.

We intentionally limit each intensive to no more than five families, so the experience remains personal, meaningful, and connected.

We also recognize the financial and logistical commitment treatment requires. If traveling for an intensive is not possible, please talk with us. We will work with you to identify other meaningful ways to remain involved and connected.

The Hub

Every Tuesday evening, Balance House families are invited to join The Hub, our virtual family support group. The Hub brings together families who are just beginning this journey and those who have been part of the Balance House community for some time.

There is something powerful about connecting with other parents who understand the fear, frustration, hope, and uncertainty that can come with loving someone through treatment.

Families are also invited to join the Balance House app, where parents can connect privately, ask questions, share experiences, and support one another. Many of these relationships continue long after treatment ends.

Once Balance House, Always Balance House

Balance House is an attachment-based program. At the heart of our work is the belief that healthy relationships have the power to change lives. We know that trusting other people with someone you love is not easy, and we do not take that trust lightly. Once you become part of the Balance House family, you remain part of the Balance House family, regardless of where your loved one’s journey takes him.

We are honored to walk alongside your family and look forward to getting to know you.
