man in treatment at Balance House for substance abuse

What kinds of therapy do you offer?

We provide a comprehensive range of therapeutic interventions, with a primary focus on attachment theory as a foundational framework for treatment. Our clinicians are trained in a variety of trauma-informed modalities, integrating approaches such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

In addition to these evidence-based therapies, we utilize experiential and somatic approaches, including: psychodrama, somatic therapies, art therapy, and equine-assisted therapy. We also offer specialized support through our occupational therapist, who works with clients to address executive functioning and life skills, providing tailored interventions to enhance daily living and cognitive abilities.

What activities do clients do?

Getting outside and getting active are crucial parts of our program. Our clients will go on camping and backpacking trips during their time with us. We also go to the gym, climbing, rafting, paddleboarding, swimming, hiking, fly fishing, skiing or snowboarding, golfing, volleyball, basketball, and softball. If someone has a special interest in an activity, we will always do our best to facilitate that. Our clients also go on outings such as paintball, indoor surfing, the movies, Real Salt Lake or Bees games, and more. We want our guys to do what they love, discover new passions, and see how full their life can be in recovery.

How long is your program?

The short answer here is: it depends. Our program is individualized towards each client that comes into our care. The length of our program varies based on each client’s individual needs:

Phase I is typically around 90 days.

Phase II is 30-60 days.

Phase III is 4-6 months.

Phase IV is 3-4 months.

We ask that clients commit to 30 days, and afterwards, we will assess their progress and determine the appropriate next steps.

Are you a 12-step program?

Our founders and many of our staff found sobriety through the 12-step model, and we believe it can be effective. Salt Lake City has a vibrant recovery community, and we encourage clients struggling with substance use to attend meetings and find sponsors when appropriate. However, we are not a 12-step-based program, and participation is not required. As stated in the AA preamble: “Alcoholics Anonymous is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization, or institution.” We believe in attraction rather than promotion, offering clients the freedom to choose their path to recovery.

What should I bring with me?

We will provide a packing list before your arrival. If you need other items, we will do our best to accommodate.

Can I speak with my family while I am in treatment?

Yes. For the first few days, we ask that clients refrain from contacting their family while they integrate with their group, make friends, and acclimate to the program.

Can I tour the facility before admission?

Certainly. Our admissions team can arrange a visit and answer any additional questions you may have.

Can you accommodate special dietary restrictions or complex medical needs?

Most likely. Please contact our admissions team to discuss details and how we can best support you.

What amenities are available at your facility?

We have a gym, music room, and movie theater room at our primary treatment center. We are also minutes away from the mountains, as well as local gyms, pools, yoga studios, and more.

How do you handle relapses during treatment?

If a relapse occurs during treatment, we reassess the individual’s needs and may adjust their treatment plan accordingly. Relapse is considered a part of the recovery journey, and our focus is on providing additional support to help the client regain their footing.
